Project Overview

The goal of the Mentored Training in Implementation Science (MTIS) career development program is to prepare scholars to become independent productive Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) researchers focused on Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep (HLBS) disorders. This K12 program provides personalized educational pathways that allow scholars to identify competencies needed to address their specific goals and anticipated career trajectory.

Implications for Research and Practice

This NIH K12 education program is uniquely positioned to build capacity in D&I research in heart, lung, blood and sleep (HLBS) disorders. The program applies state-of-the-art training methods to build capacity in postdoctoral or junior faculty researchers. This program is significant because it addresses risk factors and populations with high burden, where intervention knowledge on evidence-based programs and policies (EBPPs) is substantial, yet not commonly applied, and where a large reduction in chronic diseases is feasible if this knowledge were more widely taken up into practice and policy. Our results will impact the field by enhancing abilities to:

  • Conduct high-quality D&I research
  • Substantially speed up the translation of prevention and control of HLBS disorders into practice and policy
  • Lead efforts to train the next generation of D&I researchers

Scholar Benefits

  • 75% of the scholar’s salary (up to $100,000 per year)
  • $30,000 per year to support research, tuition and travel
    • Tuition for graduate-level coursework offered through programs at Washington University include: MSCI, MPH, MPHS
  • Career Advisory Committee

Eligibility Requirements

  • Doctoral degree such as MD, PhD, PharmD, EdD, ScD, DPT, and OTD
  • US citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident
  • Devote at 75% effort over a 2-3 year period
  • No more than 5 years beyond postdoctoral or fellowship training at program start
  • Applicants must have a research and career development plan supported by at least 1 mentor approved by the program
  • At least one of the mentors must hold NIH, CDC, or PCORI funding
  • Faculty appointment
    • At the time of application, you do not have to have a faculty appointment. However, if selected as a MTIS scholar, you will need a faculty appointment by the time you begin the program (July 1st of application year). This must be indicated in the Department Chair’s Recommendation Letter.

Program Pathways

Degree Program:

  • 2 year fellowship at Washington University
  • 1 year mentored research practicum at home institute
  • Earn a MSCI, MPH or MPHS Degree

Mentored Training:
