If you are interested in community-engaged research but unsure whether it is appropriate for your work, join The Center for Community Health Partnership and Research at Washington University on September 27th for Community Outreach and Engagement: Developing meaningful partnerships to reach your goals. The conference will feature examples of community-engaged research from a variety of perspectives. Attendees will learn from real world efforts and designed research that improves the health status of communities through engagement and inclusion. ICTS researcher Dr. Jennifer Yee will share her work and experiences. Breakout sessions, designed to continue the conversation, will follow this presentation.

Participants are invited to attend one of four Breakout sessions:

• Community Engaged Research in Medical Systems- Continue the Clinical and Translational Sciences conversation with Dr. Yee and learn about Provider Research Networks as a strategy for community engaged research in medical settings.
• Community Engaged Research in Rural Communities- Researchers will receive examples and learn about researcher experiences building a partnership in a rural community. Best practices in community-based participatory research, timing and problem solving issues and concerns that arise during the process are discussed.
• Community Engaged Research from the Community Perspective- Learn about community perceptions of and experiences with community engaged research. Researchers will hear about ways that they can better prepare for or facilitate the engagement process, barriers facing community organizations and how they might be overcome and activities that lead to decisions to respond negatively to a partnership.
• Community Engaged Research with Men- Researchers will receive examples and learn about researcher experiences building partnerships with organizations that serve men. Best practices in community-engaged work with men, venues and strategies are discussed.

Keynote: Jennifer K. Yee, MD

Jennifer K. Yee, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, is currently Chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, and Director of the Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program. She is the founder and Medical Director of the Be Forever Fit Program for pediatric weight management at Harbor-UCLA.

Dr. Yee’s focus is on childhood obesity, from research on fatty acid metabolism to delivery of health services addressing complications of obesity. She is currently principal investigator on a grant that promotes patient access to obesity-related services within a publicly-funded health care system in Los Angeles. Her role in obesity care led to involvement in the project called “Just Two Inches Away,” a community engagement project that began between the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute and community partners including Healthy African American Families.
